LOCATION: NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE BOMBING AND GUNNERY RANGE

A Black Hawk Helicopter was coming in for a landing as a camouflaged Humvee pulled up. A soldier leapt out from the helicopter, carrying a satchel. The figure approached the parked vehicle and passed the bag through the passenger seat window, then returned to the awaiting copter. The copter hovered above the clearing for a moment, then turning and exited to the east.

The Humvee drove away with its headlights and disappeared into the darkness.

A lone figure was standing in a clearing aiming a large Stinger missile at the copter. The shooter lifted the five ft. barrel, locking on its target and fired.

The pilot attempted a counter measure and dropped a Chaff flare, which exploded deploying a cloud of tiny metallic fragments. The Stinger missile passed by it ignoring this attempt to attract it and continued onward towards its heat source. Then the pilot attempted a map of the earth, this consisted of hugging the landscape in order to lose any missiles. The Black Hawk passed by another ridge, when the missile struck the body and it exploded. Blowing the chunks of burning metal, the heavy rotor and tail section all to the ground.

“BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!”

I reached up, fumbling for the snooze button and finally pressing it. Silence…yes… I curled up into a fetal position and went back to sleep.

“RING! RING!”

I thought I heard something…

“RING! RING!”

“DAMNIT…” I growled, picking the phone up and barked out, “WHAT!”

A female voice responded, “Taylor?”

I was still half asleep and sighed, “Yes, can I help you?”

“It's Valerie, Mike's girlfriend…” the voice nervously stated, “He told me to call you if anything were to happen-”

Waking up instantly upon hearing my brother's name and interrupted her, “What's wrong with MIKE?”

She blurted out, “Well, I know this sounds a bit crazy…but I had this dream…”

“Calm down, Valerie…take a deep breathe and exhale.”

She did as I asked and continued, “I saw his copter go down and there was this explosion.”

“It was only a dream-”

“He went on a late maneuver last night and hasn't came back yet.”

I sighed, feeling a bit relieved. “Well, sometimes maneuvers can take-”

Valerie sobbed and agreed, “I know…but I have this bad feeling.”

“Maybe he's out drinking with his buddies,” I suggested.

“He wouldn't do that without telling me first,” she stated and continued, “He always called me, even if was for only a moment.”

Another voice in the background spoke up, “OH, GOD! Valerie, look at this!” The volume on the TV was raised as a late breaking story aired.

Valerie gasped and her soft whimpering was heard.

I shot out of bed, turning my TV on and changed the channel to CNN. “What's going on Valerie?” I further inquired.

“THUNK!” the sound of her receiver hitting the floor.

“VALERIE!” I shouted out as something from the TV caught my eye.

Footage of the wreckage from the downed Black Hawk was being telecasted. Part of large rotor was wedged between two burning trees. The camera panned closer and revealed the carnage of twisted metals, smoldering seats and finally resting upon a burnt helmet. Fire fighters stepped into the view and were putting the remainder of the flames out.

The female reporter announced, “You're watching live footage from a downed Black Hawk. Reports from witnesses say that they heard a loud explosion before the helicopter crashed to the ground. Repeating for those who just tuned in, a Black Hawk crashed east of the Nellis Air Force Base. Sources say that this type of helicopter carried a crew of three.”

Another reporter inquired, “Are there any survivors?”

The reporter shook her head, “Officials here reported that they recovered the bodies of the three crew members.”

“Do we have to names of the crew?”

“I'm afraid not…they won't releasing the names until the families have been notified.”

I stood there stunned, watching in utter silence, as my gut grew heavy with dread. Until Valerie's sobs jerked me back into reality. I brought the phone to my ear and called out, “Valerie…” Nothing…pick the damn thing up. “Valerie, we'll talk to when I get to town,” I informed, hanging the phone up. I sat the phone down next to a framed picture, then picking the frame up and stared at.

The picture was of us at a paintball tournament. We were both wearing our 1st place medals and jerseys that read 'U.S. CHAMPIONS'. His hair was shaved short and dyed bleach blond. He always wanted to be a surfer. He had his arm draped over my shoulder, pulling me closer for the photo and a smirk to boot. My arm was wrapped around his waist as I brushed back my black tresses out from my eyes. God…that was only six months ago. I laid the picture down, wiping a lone tear from cheek and entered the restroom.

I flipped the light on, turning the faucet on and leaned over to splash some cold water myself. This can't be happening… “Be optimistic Tay…” I muttered to myself, finally looking up and into the mirror. Reflecting the image of a beautifully bronzed, 6ft Amazon, wearing a white tank top with the words 'GIRRLS RULE' and blue silk boxers. My baby blues stared right back at me, revealing the inner turmoil that I had locked up so along ago. You were all I had left- “TAY, get a grip…” I ordered myself, taking a deep breath and exhaling slowly. Focusing on what I needed to do first, which was to get dressed.

“DING DONG!” echoed throughout the house.

My heart skipped a beat as my stomach knotted itself. I grabbed a pair of sweatpants and put them on as I headed towards the front door. I fought back my tears, pulling the door open and solemnly greeted, “Hello?”

Two Army officers dressed in their class D's were standing before me. One was a Chaplin Rogers and the other was a Lt. Colonel Danpart.

My heart stopped.

The Lt. Colonel spoke up, “Can we speak to a Taylor Rineheart?”

I swallowed hard and finally responded, “That would be me.”

“May we enter?” the Chaplin inquired.

I nodded, opening the door then closing it as they entered.

MEDICAL RESEARCH LAB
LOCATION: ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO

A young woman stepped into her office carrying a stack of folders, a large cappuccino and a banana nut muffin. Ah…another day, another evolution! Dropping the folders at on the desk, taking the muffin and the drink over to the window. She stood there feeling the morning rays washing over her skin and popped a chunk of the muffin into her awaiting mouth. It's only been two months since the divorce. She noticed her reflection in the window. Revealing a striking blond with very short hair as her emerald eyes stared off into the distance. I'm starting to get used to-

“KNOCK…KNOCK!”

“Enter…”

A brunette entered, carrying a folder and greeted. “Good morning, Dr. Evans.”

She was an average looking woman in her mid twenties wearing a navy blue skirt and a white dress shirt.

Turning to her assistant, “Sally....”

Sally placed the folders next to the computer, “I'm sorry Sam.”

“Have you seen Dr. Andrews?” Sam asked, picking the folder up and glancing through it.

“Not yet,” she replied. “His assistants are in lab# 1 getting it ready for the presentation.”

“Wait…the serum wasn't stable enough.”

“Oh, Dr. Andrews left a message for you…” Sally informed, “Have you checked your messages yet?”

Sam shook her head no.

“Okay,” she said and enlightened, “We have an hour before everyone gets here.”

“Good, gives me some time to go over these reports.”

“Alright, Sam…” Sally said, leaving the room.

Sam sat down behind her desk, turning the computer on and waited for it to boot up.

A black screen appeared and in bold red letters in the center screen it read 'Voice activated'. She spoke into the mike, “Chakram”

Her voice pattern appeared on the screen. The computer searched in its database for the matching pattern and found it. Then it typed, “Good morning Samantha Evans. You have 3 new messages.”

Sam typed her code in and her first message appeared.

Samantha,

I performed the final test on the serum DAX 232. I know you wanted to be here, but I thought I'd surprise you. It passed with flying colors, no degeneration of the cells like last time. Anyway, I'll talk to you in the morning.

D. Andrews

Sam,

I know you don't want to see me now, but I really wanted to tell you that…I LOVE YOU and I want to be part of you life. Please forgive me…I've learned my lesson and I know now that you're my soul mate. Please, contact me. I want to talk to you.

Love,
Kathy

“What in the hell?” Sam grumbled, “I knew I should've changed my address…” She struck the delete button and sighed, “Delete this!”

Samantha,

I've decided to move the presentation up. I'm having it this morning at 9. I hope you'll see to our guests until I get there.

Thank you,
D. Andrews

I didn't think this would happen so fast…I know the test I did yesterday failed miserably. Something wasn't right. DAX 232 was unstable, it would degenerate the diseased cells and grow new ones but…after five minutes the cells would mutate-

“Sam, we have guests.”

“Great…” she glanced down at her watch and it read 8:30 am, “A bit early…”

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI

“RING! RING! RING!”

“I'm comin'…I'm comin'…” I muttered, wrapping a towel around myself and picked the phone up. “Hello?”

A male voice greeted, “Hey, Taylor…”

Recognizing it as my father's FBI partner and long time friend, “Jack, I see you got my message.”

“My condolences, Sweet pea…” his voice strained, “Mike was good kid and hell of pilot.”

“Thanks…” I said, holding the pain back and finally locking it up. “Did you find anything?”

“Well, it was confirmed that he was on a late mission…” the rustling of papers was heard over the phone and he continued, “They picked up a Lt. Colonel West and transported him to Edwards Air Force Base.”

“That's in California, right?”

“Yes, at 22:30 hrs Black Hawk # 2531 landed safely at the base. The logbook is now missing and the CID is all over the place. They're keeping a tight lid on everything.”

“Thanks…” I revealed, “Jack, my guts tellin' me there's something more.”

“I know, Hon…” he assured, “I'm waiting for some transcripts from the air traffic controller in Las Vegas. Maybe, they'll shed some light.”

“I hope so…”

“I'll do what I can…” he said, “I'll keep an ear out for anything.”

I took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, “Thanks.”

“Sweet pea, take some time off…” he advised, “I know how hard you work.”

“I will,” I replied, nodding. “I'm going check some things out.”

“Taylor…” he drew my name out, “This is a CID case-”

I nodded, “I know…”

Realizing that who he was talking to, “Well, be careful…okay?”

“I will,” I assured.

“If you need anything, just call.”

“I will, Jack…” I said, “Thanks for everything.”

“Your welcome, Sweet pea.”

MEDICAL RESEARCH LAB

“This concludes our tour of Dr. Andrew's Research Lab,” Sam informed, looking over at her two guests. “Do you have any questions?”

The tall man to her left was wearing a dark blue Armani suit and silently stood there. He glared at her for a moment and abruptly stated, “No…”

Great…love that attitude. She turned her attention to the person on her right and finally observed her. Reading the nametag on the General's jacket 'Dakota'. I've never met a female General before- a beautiful one at that. I guess everyone's right… there's something about a woman in a uniform, ESPECIALLY this one. She's my height…a plus. Her legs- hell her body, toned and tanned. Humm…her brown eyes- they seem familiar, yet dark. Sweet Jesus…what am I thinking? “An you Ma'am?” she inquired, praying that she wouldn't be like Mister Attitude.

Gen. Dakota felt the young Doctor's eyes upon her, flashing her a smile and replied, “No thank you, Dr. Evens”

“Sam!” she blurted out. Did I just my shout name?

Gen. Dakota just stared at her.

Shit, I did…now she thinks I'm a psycho. Sam spoke up, “I mean, you can call me Sam.”

She enlightened, “Only if you can call me Liv.”

A smile grew on Sam's face, “Sure, Liv.”

A cell phone rang.

“It's not mine,” Sam informed, looking over at Liv.

The General shook her head, no.

Mr. Attitude stepped away from them, pulling his phone out and answered it.

“Boy, he's not very social…” Sam expressed in low voice.

“Lawyers never really are,” Liv remarked with a smile, “Unless you have money.”

Sam chuckled at her. A sense of humor…WOW. That's three plus's for her.

Liv grinned at her, observing this young creature.

“Liv, would you like some coffee?” she asked.

“That would be nice.”

“Follow me,” Sam said and led her to their break room. She pulled two Styrofoam cups out and poured some coffee in each.

The Lawyer entered the room. He approached the coffee machine and procured Sam's cup. “Where is Dr. Andrews?” he growled, “Doesn't he know that we have schedules to keep?”

“I'm sorry, Mister-”

“Gloom,” he revealed.

“Mr. Gloom, you need to calm down…” she advised, pouring herself another cup. “I'm sorry about Dr. Andrews tardiness, but I have no control over it.”

“That's quite all right…” Liv assured, grinning. “Daniel's entitled to have his quirks.”

“Ditto to that.”

“Maybe for you General…” he remarked, “We're paying your salary.”

Liv stepped forward, facing this idiot and glared into his dark eyes. Full-fledged coward… “Lucky for you that I'm in a good mood…” she informed, lowering her voice. “Or there would be one less Lawyer to deal with.”

He retorted, “I'm not afraid of you.”

She mischievously grinned and decreed, “You should be…all it takes is ONE phone call and OOPS your gone.”

“You wouldn't-”

Liv shrugged, “Mr. Gloom, people disappear everyday…”

He started to say something, but kept his mouth shut and high-tailed it out of the room.

I'd hate to be on her bad side. Sam finally spoke up, “Well, that was interesting…”

“I detest cowards…” Liv uttered under her breathe.

She changed the subject, “So, how long have you known my father?”

“About year and half or so.”

“Sugar?”

“Yes, two please and bit of half-in-half.”

“Alright,” Sam nodded, finishing with her drink and held it out. “Here you go.”

“Thank you,” she said, taking the hot drink and sipping it slowly.

“Your welcome…” Sam flashed a smile toward her. *FLASH* Wake up! Why would a General want to invest- “I was just wondering-”

Reading the question in the Sam's eyes and explained, “Well, my parents both died from cancer…they left me with a nice portfolio and I decided to put it to good use.”

“I'm so sorry…” Sam gently placed her hand upon Liv's arm, realizing that she had just read her mind. Nah… “I didn't mean to pry.”

I don't know why I'm telling this stranger my life. “Your not…” Liv assured, “It's a logical question.” She placed her hand upon the Sam's and squeezed. “Thank you, for asking.”

A blush overcame her as Liv's hand remained upon hers. Her whole body tingled at the contact and suddenly it was removed. Leaving an essence of such upon me…is that possible? * FLASH* Where is my father anyway?

10:30 HRS
LOCATION: MCI
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI

I sprinted towards my gate and prayed that I had made it on time. Damn taxi driver…he was slower than molasses. Keeping my eyes peeled for gate 59 and accidentally passed by it. Realizing my mistake, I skidded to stop and glanced over at the board behind the ticket checkers, which read, 'flight 772 departing 10:55am'. Just made it… I removed my leather jacket and sat it on top of my black rucksack. After stretching a bit, I tucking my gray Henley into my black jeans. Then I retied my bootlace, noticing my reflection upon it and grinned. What one remembers from a military school…

A female voice announced, “Flight 772 for Las Vegas, Nevada is now boarding at gate 59. Please have your tickets ready.”

I passed the gate and entered the long corridor toward the plane. I slipped my ruck over my shoulder and stepped into the cabin.

A cheerful voice greeted, “Good morning, can I help you to your seat?”

“Mornin'…” I said, “No, thank you I can manage.” I passed the short brunette in search of my window seat. I found my isle, placing my bag in the overhead compartment and sat down. After tightened my seatbelt, I used my jacket as a blanket. Leaning my head back against the chair and waited for the plane to take off. Mike, so help me God…I'll get to the bottom of this. Then I closed my eyes for a moment and was out like a light.

MEDICAL RESEARCH LAB

Sam placed her white lab coat over her favorite dark green dress. Fits like glove… Feeling an extra pair of eyes on her, she looked over and made contact with familiar brown ones. Well, Liv…humm…I hope she likes what she sees.

Gen. Dakota had a small grin as her eyes lavished this young beauty, taking in all that she could. Until her damn cell phone vibrated. Damn it… She pulled out the phone from its belt case and answered it. “Dakota, here.”

A male voice spoke up, “General, there's been an accident.”

Recognizing the voice as her assistant, “Colonel, what kind of accident?”

“Black Hawk # 2531 crashed outside Nellis.”

“AND?” she growled, “That's why we have CID.”

“Yes, Ma'am…”

She sighed, “Colonel, is there anything else?”

“A Lt. Colonel West has requested a meeting with you.”

She glanced down at her watch and suggested, “Make it for 1500 HRS.”

“Yes, Ma'am.”

The General hung the phone up and placed it in its case. She glanced over at the Sam and apologized, “I'm sorry about that…”

“It's alright…” she affirmed, “Is everything okay?”

“Just fine…” she nodded, changing the subject. “So, will you be doing the honors this morning?”

I wonder what was that all about. She replied, “I guess so.”

Liv gestured for her to go first, “After you, Sam.”

She escorted them into the lab and began her portion of the presentation. “Our goal was to create a vaccine to kill tumor cells and regenerate new ones to replace them. Dr. Andrews sent you both regular updates on our progress and last night he was successful in his latest test. You should know that DAX 232 is a combination of 3-Aminopyridine-2-carboxaldehyde Thiosemicarbazone. ”

A lab assistant brought over a specimen dish and sat it down next to Dr. Evens.

“We were using beta rays to activate the inactive cells, causing them to multiply and devour the tumor. Our criterion for the malignant solid tumor is that it has failed more than one of the conventional treatments.”

Sally approached on Sam's left carrying a syringe of the DAX 232; a neon green liquid.

“Thanks, Sally…” she said, taking the syringe and injecting the tumor specimen. She placed it under the microscope, watching it for a moment and continued with her speech. “Here we have a brain tumor and I've just injected the serum into it,” she stated, “Within a minute we have a reaction.” Sam flipped a switch on the microscope and a small screen lit up, projecting the reaction.

The darker mass was the tumor and DAX 232 the neon green cells. The neon cells surrounded the dark mass, until it was completely covered. The tumor began to break down, within a moment it disintegrated.

Mr. Gloom remarked, “So, it did work…”

Sam nodded, “Of course…the main problem was after five minutes the cells-”

“All we care about it is that it worked,” he revealed, pulling out his cell phone and calling his client.

A gray haired gentleman rushed into the room, wearing a white dress shirt, a gray tie, gray pants and a lab coat. He was fixing his nametag, which read 'Dr. Andrews'. His green eyes instantly made contact brilliant emerald ones. Just like your beloved Mother… “I'm so sorry Samantha,” he said, approaching her. “My car broke down on the way here. I was stuck on highway 25 for last 45 minutes and to top it off I left my phone at home,” he whispered.

Sam turned around, giving him a big hug and whispered back, “Dad, it's alright…I'm just finishing up.”

“Good,” Dr. Andrews nodded, letting his daughter go and turned to his friend. “Liv, looking good as usual…” he greeted, holding his hand out. “I hope Samantha here hasn't bored you to death with all this Medical jargon. Considering it's not as entertaining as Military tactics in war.”

The General grinned at his comment, shaking his hand. “Daniel, your lovely daughter here had me captivated from the moment we met.”

Sam blushed at complement.

“She has the tendency to do that,” Daniel revealed.

“Dad…”

Liv reiterated, “So, you said after five minutes…”

“Oh, yeah…” Sam continued on, “The healthy cells would regenerate, but after five minutes they would mutate.”

“Until I figured it out last night…” Daniel remarked, “It was a matter of the right quantity or mixture and too much caused the mutation.”

“So, it's ready for phase 2 then?” Liv inquired.

Daniel nodded, “Yes, human testing.”

ON FLIGHT 772

Kemper Military School 1978

“I don't wanna go!”

“You have to dear,” a female voice said.

“Where's my Daddy?”

She shook her head, “I don't know, Honey.”

I was sleeping next to my mommy, when I woke up to this strange woman. She said that she knew where my daddy was. “YOU said you going to take me him!” I shouted, tears streaming from my eyes. “You lied!”

The woman apologized, “Taylor, I'm sorry…but this is for you own good.”

“Where's my bubby?”

The woman replied, “Honey, he's staying with a family.”

“Why can't I?”

“Because, you have to go to school.”

“WHERE'S my MOMMY!”

“Taylor, calm down…” she assured, “She's in the hospital, Sweetie. Do you remember what I said?”

I nodded, “Mommy's sick and that she was sleeping.”

“That's right…” she said. “Do you remember what your Mommy said to you?”

I sniffled, wiping my nose on my sleeve and recited, “Taylor, you need to be strong for me… okay? And promise me you will.”

“What did you say?”

“I promise…”

“Do strong girls cry?”

“No Ma'am,” I shook my head, wiping the tears from my eyes.

“Come on Sweetie,” she said, holding her hand out for me.

I took a deep breath and exhaled slowly as I took her hand. We climbed the stairs and entered the large brick building.

*A FLASH OF LIGHT*

I bolted up, but was held in place by my lap belt. “Damnit…” I grumbled. Great, that's all I need now…memories of Kent. I looked around the cabin and noticed the Stewardess was handing out drinks and some snacks. Good, I'm kinda hungry. I yawned, rubbing the sleep from my eyes and heard her squeaking cart stop at my isle.

“What can I get for you to drink?”

I looked up and my eyes stared into pale blue ones. I swallowed hard as I took in this striking young woman before. She was around 5' 4'', curly blond hair, tanned with an athletic build. Wow… I finally spoke up, “ A Dr. Pepper, please. I don't need a cup.”

“Sure…” she said, pulling out a can and a bag of peanuts. She passed them both to me, then leaned over and whispered, “There you go…if you need anything just call me.”

I glanced at her nametag, which read 'Amanda'. “Thank you,” I flashed a grin, flirting back. “I'll keep that in mind, Amanda.”

“Can I ask-”

“My name's Taylor.”

“Taylor, it was nice talking to you.”

“Likewise.”

Amanda pushed her cart forward and continued on with her duties.

I leaned my chair back and made myself comfortable as I stared out the window.

CHAPTER 2

MEDICAL RESEARCH LAB

The General acknowledged, “Alright, I'm behind you all the way.”

Daniel ginned as he sat back in his chair. “Thank you, Liv.”

She silently stared out the window.

Reading the worried look upon his friends face and spoke up, “Liv, what's wrong?”

“My gut is telling me that your lab isn't secured enough.”

“What brought this about?”

She looked over at him and replied, “# 1this is your life work. # 2 I'd like to protect my investment. As you well know, once the word is out about the DAX 232, everyone and their grandmother will come looking for it.”

“Well, we could put in another security system…maybe hire a guard.”

Liv gestured, “They can be bought.”

Daniel nodded, “I guess so…well, what did you have in mind?”

The General leaned against the Doctor's desk and made eye contact with him. “Daniel, do you trust me?” she asked.

“Of course!” he retorted. “What brought that up?”

Liv never broke eye contact and purposed, “Well, I have all the resources…such as high tech labs and not to mention the best computers in the world. The most important factor is that I HAVE the best security force in the United States. It even beats the personal security of our President by two fold. I'd like you to move your lab to my base.”

His eyes widen, “You really think we need that much security?”

She nodded, “I wouldn't say it if I didn't mean it.” She observed his reaction, as he contemplated it and spoke up. “You will have full reign of the labs and anything that will aid you in our success. And to make the deal sweeter, you don't even have to pay for anything. Everything's on me.”

“Liv, now that's too much to ask-”

She gestured, “It's the least I can do, considering that your serum will save millions of lives one day.”

He sighed, “I pray that it would happen soon…I'm tired of seeing so many innocent people die. Just like my-” Memories of a young woman, who was the splitting image of Sam. She brushed her long flowing hair and mouthed, “I love you…”

Liv inquired, “Daniel, are you all right?”

“Yeah,” he said, “I just thinking of Sara.”

“Sam's Mother?”

He silently nodded.

“I'm sorry for bringing this up…” Liv apologized, “We can talk about another time.”

“No, it's alright…” Daniel shook his head, “Go on, Liv.”

“I believe in you Daniel,” she placed her hand upon his shoulder, “This will help you focus on your goal.”

“What about my staff?”

“That wouldn't be a problem. They'd have go through a required background check, first and that'll take a few hours.”

“The living arrangements?”

“I can furnish you with best house on base or you could live off base. I've housing for your assistants too if need be. The closest city is Las Vegas, it's only 7 miles away. You can even work your own hours. Daniel, take all the time you need.”

He revealed, “I'm going to have to talk this over with Samantha.”

“By all means,” she affirmed.

“Knock…Knock…”

“Come in,” Daniel called out.

Sam opened the door and entered the room. “I took care of Mr. Gloom,” she flatly stated.

“Good,” he nodded, “Samantha, we need to discuss something.”

“What about?”

“I'm going to step out for a moment,” Liv said, leaving the two to talk and closed the door behind her.

“Liv, purposed something to me…” he informed, “but I wanted to speak to you before I agreed to anything.”

“What is it Dad?”

Daniel stood up and walked around his desk to face her. “What are your thoughts on moving the lab to more secure place?”

“Why?”

He ran his fingers through his hair and enlightened, “Because, the publicity about it might bring out thieves…who would take my life's goal in a blink of a eye and use it to their advantage.”

Noticing that her father was agitated and assured him. “Dad, calm down…” she said, placing her hand on his arm. “I know it means a lot to you, I just want make sure it's legit. I mean…we haven't had any problems so far.”

“I know,” he nodded, “But the closer we get-”

“I understand…”

Daniel caressed his daughter's cheek and expressed, “I just want us to be safe. I don't know what I'd do if anything would happen to you.”

“Shhh…” she hushed him, “Let's not talk like that. Daddy, if your heart tells you do it then do it. I'll be behind you in whatever you decide.”

He pulled his only daughter in for a hug, kissing her forehead gently. “Samantha, you're just like your Mother. She'd be proud of you dear.”

Sam blushed, hugging him tighter. “Aww…Dad…”

“I mean it, Samantha…”

“Thanks, Daddy.”

“Let me go and get Liv,” he said, releasing her. He opened the door and called out, “Liv, come on in.”

“Yeah?” Liv responded and entered the room. She stared at each one and waited patiently for their answer.

“We've made our decision,” Daniel informed, “I'll take you up on your offer, Liv.”

The General grinned at the news and responded, “Are you sure?” She turned her attention to Sam and assured, “I don't want you think I'm pressuring you or anything.”

Sam shook her head, no. “Liv, I agree…it's for the best.”

“Good…” Liv acknowledged, pulling her cell phone out.

Daniel stated, “It's going to take us a few days to pack and move.”

“Not necessarily…” the General suggested, “I can have you have there by nightfall if you like.”

He spoke up, “That's too much-”

Liv turned to him, raising a brow and explained. “I've done this many times before…its no trouble. Besides, we train our soldiers to break things down and move in a moments notice anyway.”

He agreed, “I guess your right.”

Liv patted Daniel on the back and expressed, “It'll be fun…trust me.”

“So, where are we moving to?” Sam inquired.

“Nellis Air Force Base,” Liv revealed, dialing a number.

HOURS LATER ON FLIGHT 772

I'm running towards a large brick building. Noticing a lone sentry walking away from me and I slipped past him unnoticed. I reach a window, finding it locked and go to the next one, which turns out to be unlocked. Checking the area again, finding no one and I slowly opened the window. I climbed in and disappeared in the shadowy room.

The room seems to be an office of sorts. I flicked on my tiny flashlight and scanned the room for anything. I go to the desk and look around. My elbow knocked over a picture frame, instantly I picked it up. Glancing over it, it's of a beautiful woman with long blond hair. She's holding an infant, as her emerald eyes were lovingly staring back at the photographer.

“Those eyes-“

*FLASH*

A female voice called out, “COME ON!”

“WAIT!” I sprinted towards the voice. I caught a glimpse of the woman's lab coat as she turned a corner.

“EEEERRROWLLLL!!!” echoed from behind me.

I stopped in my tracks and spun around. That growl…or whatever came from that direction. I instinctively reached behind me for my .45 and found an empty holster. “DAMNIT!” Whatever it is…it's sounds like it's moving. I turned and bolted down the hall, praying that the woman hadn't gone too far. I skidded to the corner and looked back one more time as a shadow of sorts followed behind. I rounded the corner and ran into a –

*FLASH*

“BAM…BAM…BAM…BAM!” four rounds were shot in row.

“Are you alright?”

That voice…I've heard it before…sounds familiar.

“Yeah…” I uttered. Someone's trying help me up. I began to stir and opened my eyes, but all I see was a giant blur. An arm slipped around my waist as the other placed my arm around their neck. I tightened my arm around the person's neck. My hand brushed upon a breast. “Sorry…” I apologized. Praying that it was the same woman from before.

“It's all right,” the gentle voice assured, “I'm going to help you up, okay?”

I nodded, “Sure.”

“BAM…BAM…BAM…BAM!”

She lifted me with her legs, but I felt my legs give out and all my weight was on this poor woman.

“I got ya,” another female voice spoke up and wrapped her arm around me. “Lets go!”

*FLASH*

“Come on, wake up…” the comforting voice said.

I tried to speak, but nothing came out.

*FLASH*

A voice inquired, “Wake up…”

I felt someone's hand upon my shoulder.

“Taylor?”

I opened my eyes, focusing on my surroundings and realized that I was still on the plane. I turned toward the voice and it belonged to Amanda. “Hello,” I said, sitting up.

She stared at me with worried eyes and asked, “I noticed you jerking in your sleep…”

“A weird dream…” I replied, flashing a smile at her, “I'm all right. Thanks, for checking on me.”

“Must be,” she nodded, as her eyes made contact with mine. “Umm…we're about to land,” she informed, taking a deep breath and exhaled slowly. She pulled out folded piece of paper and handed it to me. “This for you.”

“Thank you…” I said, taking it and watching her leave. Glancing down at my watch, which read 4:55pm. I stared out the window, wondering what that dream meant. If it even means anything at all.

MEDICAL RESEARCH LAB

Air force personnel were working on loading the remainder of the equipment in to the trucks outside. Lab assistants were boxing all the files and research material, for the move. A soldier passed by with a computer terminal in his arms.

Daniel was placing all his disks into a satchel, along with his personal notes and picture of his wife Sara, who was holding Samantha as an infant. He zipped it up and slung it over his shoulder.

Sam popped her head in and informed, “I'm back Dad…”

“Did you get everything?”

“I think so…”

He turned to his daughter, “Lets do a quick a walk through-”

“Dad, I just did it.”

“I guess it's time to go then,” he said leaving his office and closed the door behind him.

OUTSIDE THE LAB

Two squads of soldiers were climbing into the bed of a smaller truck.

An armed SP (Military Police) climbed into the back of the larger truck as his partner secured the canvas cover. He went around and climbed into the drivers seat.

A Lt. Devins approached them, “Dr. Andrews, will you be taking a car?”

Daniel nodded, yes. “Samantha's…”

“Alright,” he responded, “Just follow us, Sir…” he turned to Samantha, “Ma'am.”

Sam climbed into her black BMW, unlocking the door for her father and started it up. After fixing her seatbelt, she turned to the radio and tried to find a good station.

Daniel placed his bag next to the others in the back seat and sat down. He shut the door, buckling his belt and made himself comfortable.

The trucks moved forward.

Sam backed out of her parking space and followed right behind.

Mc MARRAN INTL. AIRPORT

I buckled my belt and pulled out the map from my ruck. I opened it over the steering wheel and found my location. I traced the 15 North until it crossed the 95 Northwest towards Nellis. Well, it's not that far… I traced further Northeast on the 15, east of the base. “He said it was two miles outside the Moapa River Indian Reservation,” I muttered to myself. I laid the map to the side and started the car up.

A BIT LATER

I pulled my rented Saturn SL into a gas station, just outside the Reservation. I stretched a bit and took in my surroundings. Desert-like conditions. My eyes noticed a wooded area about a mile away. That's weird…desert everywhere and plop! A sparse wooded area. Huh?

A female voice asked, “Hey, do you need gas?”

I turned to her, “Nah…just directions.”

The young woman was wearing dirty coveralls, a baseball cap, which read 'Love thy Mother' covered her shaved head and a cigarette dangled from the corner of her mouth. She had an athletic build and a nice tan that was hidden under all the grime. Her dark eyes took in the beautiful Stranger before her. “Where do ya want to go?”

“Where's the quickest route to that Black Hawk crash site.”

“Everyone's been tryin' go there…" she sighed, "don't know why people want to see carnage like that,” shrugging, “Damn CID's has it all blocked off.”

I raised a brow, “Is there another way?”

“Why?” she retorted, her eyes narrowing. “Your not one of those report-”

I removed my sunglasses and stared at her, “No…I'm not.”

She suspiciously glared at me.

“My brother was the pilot…”

“How do I know this isn't a trick?”

“I'm from Kansas City,” I pulled out my badge, showing it to her. “Detective Taylor Rineheart, I'm trying to find the truth behind his death.”

“YOU'RE A COP?”

“I'm not going to do anything to you,” I assured her, “All I want to do is find out what really happened. And if you know anything, that would help me-”

“Uhhh…damn, “she muttered under her breath, “You don't seem like the type that would lie. I guess it's for a good cause…your brother and all.”

“Thanks…I appreciate it,” I said and held my hand out. “Name's Taylor.”

“Malachi.” the mechanic informed, wiping her hand on her pants. “Nice to meet ya, Taylor,” she shook her hand.

CHAPTER 3

“So, do you know this area well?”

“Yep,” she nodded, “Been here all my life.”

“Good, so I guess you know-”

“Like the back of my hand,” she finished, “But if you want in there, you'll have to wait till it's dark.”

“Alright.”

“Do ya need a place to stay?”

It didn't even cross my mind… I responded, “Yes, I guess I do.”

“My wife runs an inn a mile back,” she gestured, “Elysian Fields, tell her I sent you. She'll give you a good deal.”

“Thanks, Malachi…” I said, pulling out my card and passed it to her. “Here's my cell number, call me anytime.”

Malachi took it and grinned, “My wife might think we're have'n an affair or something.”

“I don't want you-”

The mechanic chuckled.

I raised a brow.

“It's a joke,” she revealed. “Taylor, loosen up…we'll help you find your answers.”

“Sure,” I flashed her a grin, turning back to my car. “I'll talk to you later,” I informed, getting into my car.

“See ya!”

01JAN2000
1500 HRS
GEN. DAKOTA'S OFFICE
LOCATION: NELLIS AFB

“WHAT IN THE HELL HAPPENED?”

Lt. Colonel West, a dark haired man in his late thirties, held his hat between his arm and his side and his body was in ate ease stance. He kept his gray eyes locked on his Commanding Officer.

“Well?”

Colonel finally responded, “I don't know, Ma'am.”

Sitting back in her chair and suggested, “Start from the beginning.”

“I was transported by Black Hawk # 2531, we arrived at Edwards at 2300 hrs.”

“What were you doing in Edwards?”

“Dropping off a package.”

“What kind of package?”

He shook his head, “I didn't check, Ma'am.”

Narrowing her eyes at him, “Who gave this order to you?”

“Brigadier General Wright, Ma'am.”

The General stared at him, assessing him and abruptly changed the subject, “Colonel, I'm expecting some guests here later tonight. I want you to set them up in the Lab #5.”

He blurted out, “You want them in Area 51?”

She raised a brow, “Did I stutter?”

“No, Ma'am.”

“Since you're already head of security there, include them as well.”

He nodded, “Yes, Ma'am.”

Remembering something else, “No one's to know about this,” glaring at him, “Do I make myself clear?”

“Yes, Ma'am.”

“Dismissed.”

The Colonel moved to attention and saluted her.

The General rose up and returned the salute.

He took a step back, made a left face and exited the room.

Liv watched the Colonel leave before she picked up her phone and dialed a number. She spun her chair around, facing the large window behind her and opened the blinds.

The phone was picked up on the third ring and a husky male voice greeted, “Brigadier General Wright, here.”

A smirk formed upon Liv's face, “General Wright, it's-”

“Liv!” he recognized the caller's voice and stated, “It's been a while. How's everything going?”

“Sam, just fine.”

ON A C-130 HERCULES (CARGO PLANE)

Sam and Daniel were strapped into the side seats in the cargo area. Sam was enjoying her apple and thumbing through a magazine. “So, Dad…”

Daniel was lightly napping, until he heard his daughter's voice. “Yes, Sweetheart?”

“What's your thoughts on Liv?”

“She's a exceptional young woman…very bright.”

Sam whispered, “not to mention, fine-looking.”

He opened his eyes at the tiny comment and spoke up, “So, my little girl likes them in uniform. Humm…well, at least she's a General.”

Sam punches him in the shoulder and whined, “Daddy!”

“Liv's a nice,” he expressed and whispered, “Is she family?”

Sam blushed at this ancient phrase, “I believe so.”

“Well, chance makes good bed fellows.”

“Dad!”

ELYSIAN FIELDS INN

I threw my ruck over my shoulder as I opened the door and stepped into the office.

“DING-A-LING!” the sound of the tiny bell overhead.

Glancing up at the bell as I entered the tiny office.

“What can I do for you?”

I turned toward the voice that came from behind the desk.

A burly, dark haired woman had her feet on the desk. She was leaning back in her chair, watching TV. She picked up the remote and turned the volume down.

I looked back and noticed a fifteen-inch color TV in the corner. Some kind of talk show was showing a couple arguing. Then they erupted in a slugfest. Crap…TV. “I need a room,” I replied, feeling this woman's eyes upon my body and I cringed. “Malachi sent me-”

“What's that hoe doin' anyway?” she grumbled under breathe, “I'm tryin' to make a livin' here.” She pulled out a ledger, a pen and placed them in front of the Stranger. “It'll be five bucks a day,” she said. “Just sign in.”

I signed in, pulling out my wallet and pulled out a ten. “Here, you go…” I stated, “Two days.”

“Thanks, Miss Rineheart…” she took it and placed into a small box. The woman reached behind her and grabbed a key labeled # 7. “Room 7, you have cable, a phone and a king size bed,” she informed, “If you need anything just call me. My name's Kelly.”

“Taylor,” I revealed, taking the key. “Thanks, Kelly.”

“Your welcome,” she grinned, “It's on your right.”

I stepped outside and followed her directions to my room. Reaching my door, I unlocked it and entered the decent size room. I tossed my ruck on the bed and bee lined it to the restroom. After finishing my business, I flipped the TV on and sat down on the bed. I pulled out my cell, dialing my home number and checked my messages.

The automated voice said, “You have 1 message.”

I pulled out a pin from my jacket and address book form ruck.

A male voice spoke up, “Miss Rineheart, my condolences…Mike was the best pilot I've flown with and a good friend. Anyway, I have some info you might like hear. My name is Kevin and my number is -”

I hurriedly copied the number down and dialed the number. The phone rang twice and on the third it was picked up.

The same voice from the message answered, “Hello?”

“Kevin?” I asked, “You left a message on my machine.”

“Miss Rineheart,” he stated, “I'm sorry to hear about Mike's death. We worked together on some missions together. Until my recent transfer to Nellis.”

“Thanks,” I responded and inquired, “You said you had some information?”

“Yes, I do…” he stated, “But not on the phone. So, where are you staying?”

How would he know- “How do-”

“Because, if it was my brother…I'd sure as hell be here.”

I chucked a bit and answered, “I'm at the Elysian Fields on highway 15.”

“I'll pick you up in 10 minutes,” he said, “I know a café that's nearby.”

“Sure,” my stomach growled, “That would be nice. I'll see you in a few.”

“Alright, later…”

I hung my phone up, placing it back its case and stretched out on the bed. I've got some time…

NELLIS AFB

The large cargo plane's tail section was in an upright position locked and ready for it's cargo to be unloaded. Airmen were unloading the equipment and finally the trucks. Lt. Devin was escorting the Doctors towards the greeting area.

Sam placed her round-rimmed sunglasses on, observing the airstrip and then her gaze went to the gorgeous blue sky above.

Daniel nudged her, “Liv's here.”

Sam instantly turned as her eyes made contact with ones of brown. Her smile grew bigger as her face lit up. “Hello, Liv.”

“Sam…always a pleasure to see you again,” she enlightened, flashing her a grin. “Daniel…how was your trip?”

“Oh, it was okay….” he shrugged, “It's lacking in the entertainment area, thou.”

Liv chuckled, ushering them to the car and responded, “I know…” lowering her voice an octavo; “Uncle Sam doesn't like it when we're having too much fun.”

Sam whispered, “That's too bad.”

“The good thing is that we have Vagas,” Liv decreed.

“Oooo…gambling, the lights…”

“Chaos…” Daniel grumbled.

Sam raised a brow, “Dad, I thought-”

“Booze induced Gamblers, cheap acts and Showgirls-” he flatly stated, “Well, Showgirls might be nice to see.” A grin formed upon his otherwise serious face.

“DAD!”

He abruptly spoke up, “Maybe you and Liv-”

“Dad…” Sam whined as a blush overcame her.

Liv noticed this and inquired, “Sam, I would be honored if I could escort you on a night of fun and excitement.”

“I'd like that…”

“It's settled then, we have a date.”

FRANCES' CAFÉ

I glanced up from my menu and stared over at Kevin. He's about Mike's height, a bit more muscular; dark shaved hair, tanned and had deep brown eyes. I look back at my menu and found what I wanted.

A waitress approached us and greeted, “What can I get you two?”

“After you, Miss Rineheart.”

“I'll take the # 2, French fries, a Dr. Pepper and a glass of water.”

“Okay,” she nodded, turning to Kevin. “And you?”

“I want the # 4, French fries and a glass of water.”

She jotted it down, gathering the menus with her. “Alright then, I'll bring your drinks to you right away.” She scurried off and to fetch our drinks and place the order.

“I still can't believe that you're from the same gene pool as Mike,” he flirted, “He showed me a pic of you and my jaw dropped.”

“Thanks…” I grinned, changing the subject. “So, how long have you known my brother?”

“About 2 years now,” he replied, “I met him through one my many missions.”

“What kind of missions?”

“Oh, Black OPS…he would transport us to our next objective.”

“Is that what he was doing-”

Kevin shook his head, no. “He called me before he left, about his visit to Nellis. We were going to hang out in Vegas this weekend.”

“He called you?”

“Yes, he told me that he had to transport a Lt. Colonel.”

“West.”

“Yeah, that's him.”

“Do you know anything about him?”

“A bit,” he shrugged, “He's an Officer through and through…but there's something about him that makes you not want to trust him.”

“Really?” I inquired, “What's his MOS at Nellis?”

The waitress brought back their drinks and continued on her rounds.

“He's a Black OPS Commander on the base. His main position is the head of security for Area 51.”

I raised a brow, “Area 51?”

Kevin took a quick sip, lowering his voice. “It's true…the Government keeps all kinds of weird stuff there.”

“What do you mean?”

He looked around the room, “I was on patrol about month ago. When I heard what sounded like a scream, I though it was person but I was told later that it was Alien.”

“An Alien?”

“I didn't believe it at first either,” he stated, “Until I was a patrolling the underground labs and I heard it again. Taylor, it seemed to be in some kind of pain.”

I just stared at him, observing his demeanor. He seemed to be telling me the truth. “In pain?”

Kevin leaned closer to her, “So, I went to check it out and found them moving it from one lab to another.”

“So, you saw this creature?” I asked, taking a drink.

He nodded, “The scientists were pushing its cage…the thing was on its knees in pain. It seemed to be holding its side. The creature glanced up at me and tried to lunge for me, but the bars kept it in. Then I noticed West following in tow towards the new room. He held out some kind of device and activated it. The creature shrieked, shaking uncontrollably and fell to the ground. I ducked back around the corner and prayed that no one noticed me.”

“What did it look like?”

“About six ft, dark hair covered it's body…very muscular…human-like and those eyes-”

The Waitress came back with their food, placing them on the table. “There you go…do you guys need anything else?”

I shook my head, no.

“No thank you,” Kevin responded.

The waitress moved to the next table, leaving them to their dinners.

“Kevin, I have one question…”

“Shoot.”

“Do you do drugs?”

His eyes widen at the question and abruptly answered, “NO…I don't even take aspirin. I know this sounds crazy…but it's the truth.”

“I just want to make sure,” I explained and continued, “You're telling me that the Government is really keeping Aliens and doing weird experiments. What do you expect me to say? This sounds like something from the Sci- Fi channel.”

“I know…” he nodded, “I don't blame you for being skeptical.”

I took a bite from my sandwich and wiped my mouth.

“Anyway, about Mike…” he abruptly changed the subject. “Someone witnessed Mike's copter landing outside of Nellis.”

CHAPTER 4

“What?” I blurted out, “Where?”

“East of the base.”

“Who said this?”

“I heard it from Jenkins…” he said, taking a bite from his sandwich.

“Who's Jenkins?”

“He's a Corporal in my squad,” he said, taking a sip from his drink. “He's a good guy.”

“When did he see this take place?”

Kevin shrugged, “I guess before it happened.”

“Did he say anything else?”

“Not to me…”

I raised a brow and inquired, “Why hasn't he said anything to the CID's?”

“Because, he's scared…” he revealed, “They're all kinds of things that one might see here BUT one doesn't say anything, for fear of repercussion.”

Blurting out, “My brother's dead!”

Everyone in the café turned toward us for a moment.

I glared right back at them and they all went back to their meals.

“Taylor, calm down…”

I lowered my voice, “If someone has any information on my Mike's death…” calming down a bit, “I want to speak to this Jenkins.”

“I'll set up a meeting,” he nodded and continued, “But you have to understand The Black OPS is part of the special tactics team that was created to protect our Government's little secrets.”

Glaring at him and growled, “AND?”

“We wipe them out and remove any traces of our objective. NOTHING is left…all their records disappear as if they hadn't even been born. By some chance if there are any loose ends…they're terminated along with it,” Kevin decreed, focusing on me.

NELLIS AFB

“So, will this be satisfactory?” Liv inquired, finishing the tour of their new home.

“Yes!” they replied in unison.

Liv observed their reaction to this prestigious home. It was reserved only for visiting Generals or high Government official. I hoped that they would like it… “Well, I'm glad.”

“Are you sure this isn't too much?” Sam inquired.

Daniel agreed, “Yeah, Liv this is going overboard.”

Liv shook her head, “No, my friend…it hasn't been lived in for awhile. We only use it for special guests…” she glances at both of them, “which I consider you both.”

Sam and Daniel turn to one another.

Sam spoke up, “I like it…”

“It's more than perfect, Liv…” he enlightened, “Thank you.”

“You're welcome,” Liv flashed them a smile. “I'll let you two settle in.”

Sam stood there silently smiling.

Daniel waved, “Bye, Liv.”

The General turned, exiting the front door and closed it behind her.

“Sam, aren't you going to talk to her?”

Snapping out of her daze, “OH, yeah!” Am I that dense? Sam bolted after her.

OUTSIDE

“LIV!”

Liv halted in the middle of the yard and turned around, “Yes, Sam?”

Sam rushed up to her, stopping to face this fine-looking woman. I can't believe I'm doing this… “Do you have time to talk?” she nervously asked.

“For you, of course…” Liv replied, remembering her driver. “But, let me dismiss my driver, first.” She approached the driver, who was holding the door for her. “Thank you, Sergeant. You're dismissed.”

“Yes, Ma'am.” The Sergeant said, closing the door and stood at attention. He snapped a salute and waited.

The General instinctively went to attention and returned the salute.

Sam stood there watching this interaction, between the enlisted person and the woman before her. God, she must be strong…I wouldn't be able to handle the pressure of so many lives that one must be in charge of. She finally spoke up, “So, where do you live?”

Liv smirked and pointed, “Right there.”

Sam glanced in the direction, noticing the two-story colonel home next to theirs. It was bigger than guesthouse. She was surprised, “We're neighbors?”

Liv nodded, “Yes, is that a problem?”

“No, Liv…not at all,” she responded, “We could have little barbeques…and stuff.”

Liv chuckled at the thought and led her towards the house.

Did Liv just chuckle? She did… Sam arched a brow, “What's so funny?”

Calming herself down and replied, “Me in an apron, cooking over a grill and hanging out with friends.”

“Oh,” Sam pictured it and voiced, “You'd look good.”

“Thanks…”

I can't believe I just said that…but she's taking it well. She hasn't run away yet…that's a plus.

Liv unlocked the door and opened the door for her guest. “After you Sam.”

“Thanks,” Sam said, entering.

The living area was spacious and open. A large oak table sat in the center of the room as two large candlesticks sat atop it. There were two doorways across the room, one led to the kitchen and another to laundry room. Large picture windows adorn the room as well as the expensive oil paintings that hung on the walls. A huge Persian rug covered the buffed hardwood floor. An elegant winding staircase led to the rooms upstairs.

Sam stood there in awe, “Wow…”

Liv came up from behind and whispered into her ear, “If you like this, you should see my other home in Savannah.”

EIYSIAN FIELDS INN

Kevin pulled up in front of my room, “Here you go, Taylor.”

I released my seat belt and climbed out, “Thanks, Kevin.”

“I'll talk to later.”

“Alright,” I nodded, shutting the door. “Bye…” I watched him back out and drive off. I stood there for a moment, feeling a chill in the air and turned to enjoy the gorgeous sunset. Breathe taking…almost as nice as those emerald eyes. Where in the hell- I felt my phone vibrating against my side. Kinda' feels good…if was a bit lower and to the left- “Get a grip Tay…it's been way too long,” I grumbled, answering it. “Taylor here.”

“Sweet pea!”

I grinned at the thought and greeted, “What's up Jack.”

“I have some info from McMarran Intl. It says here Mike's copter landed North of the crash site.”

I unlocked my door, stepping inside and closed the door. “I heard…” I sighed.

Jack retorted, “From who?”

“Oh, I have a witness-”

“That's good.”

“I haven't spoke to him directly…it's hearsay for now.”

“It's better than nothing.”

“I guess…” I shrugged, remembering. “Oh, Jack can you get me some info on the following; Black OPS, Colonel West, Kevin Becker and Area 51.”

“Alright-” realizing what she had just asked and blurted out, “BLACK OPS and AREA 51?”

“Yeah, is that a problem?”

“Well, The Black OPS are so classified that if one tries to find ANYTHING…they instantly know about it.”

“Damn…and the other?”

“Area 51…” he repeated, sighing. “There is no such place- I mean they test aircrafts there…but the alien stuff….nah, that's in the movies.”

Shaking my head, “I don't know…”

“KNOCK…KNOCK!!”

I went to the door and opened it. “Hello?”

“What's up girl?” Malachi was standing there, holding a six-pack of the beast and a cig daggling from her mouth.

“Malachi, come on in…” I said, turning to my other conversation. “Jack, I gotta go.”

“Sweet pea, be careful…” he advised, “Talk to later.”

“Bye…” I hung it up, putting it away and turned to my guest. “Thirsty are we?”

“I thought we could kick back a few…” Malachi revealed, “Cause, we still have a bit to wait. Besides, I like to get to know someone before I go trompin' in the woods with them.”

I grinned at her, “I guess it wouldn't hurt.”

“Come on outside…its a beautiful sunset,” she enlightened, tossing a can.

I caught it, flicking the lid and taking a large swig from it. Damn, 2nd cheapest beer in the US…but it does its job. “Thanks…”

“So, Taylor…” Malachi opened her can and asked, “What do ya think of our fair city?”

“I guess it's alright…” Feeling her eyes on me for a bit and I finally spoke up, “Do you have a problem?”

She broke her gaze and stared at the ground, “Sorry, you look familiar.”

“Oh…” I said, raising a brow. “So, what's the plan?”

Malachi took a drag and replied, “Well, I gotta' park about a mile from the crash.” taking a sip, “Then we hike…I hope ya packed some boots.”

“Matter a fact, I'm wearing genuine government issued ones.”

She glanced down at them and expressed, “They're spit shined too…damn, where you in the Military?”

“You could say that,” I responded, taking another sip. . “So, how many times have you been there?”

She eyed me and responded, “The area in part…is my favorite partying area. Throw in some beer, hot curvy babes and a secluded area for miles. What more do ya want?”

Rising my brow once again as I finished my beer in one large gulp.

“So, Taylor…” Malachi spoke up, tossing another can. “Are ya hitched?”

“No, “ I abruptly replied, catching it and popped it open. “Do you have flashlights?”

“In the Jeep.”

“Good,” I nodded, taking another sip. “We should head out then.”

“Sure,” she said, killing her cig on the soul of her boot. “After you finish your beer.”

I lifted the can to my lips and with three large gulps I downed it. I turned, tossing the can in the wastebasket in my room and closed the door. “Lets go,” I advised, locking my door and approached her Jeep.

“All rightie then…” Malachi uttered and finished the rest of her beer.

CHAPTER 5

NELLIS AFB BARRACKS

Kevin was waiting patiently by a door.

The door opened, revealing an average sized tanned male in his mid 20's. His dark eyes darted nervously around as he ran his fingers through his close cropped hair. “Kevin, what's up?”

“Can I speak to you?”

He took another quick glance and nodded, “Yeah, come in.”

CUT TO LIV'S LIVING QUARTERS

Sam was glancing through Liv's library as she waited.

“If you ever need to borrow a book…as you can see I've got plenty.”

She turned towards her voice, “Thanks…”

Liv descended down the stairs wearing black cut off jeans and a large tank top, which read; 'PRINCESS MONONOKE'. Revealing a black sports bra and more of her athletic body. “So, what did you want to talk about?”

Sam gazed upon her and uttered, “I never thought you were a jeans kind of person.”

Liv grinned at the comment as she entered her kitchen and replied, “No one ever does…” bringing with her two bottle waters, “Everyone thinks I'm this cold hearted bitch 24hrs a day.”

“You're very professional and I can see how they might mistake it.”

Liv nodded, handing her a bottle. “But, I'm a warm blooded woman…” she moved closer to Sam and seductively revealed, “whose needs haven't been fulfilled in a very long time.”

Feeling the overwhelmingly hot from her close proximity. “I'm surprised again…” she retorted, “I'd think you would be taken by now.”

Liv chuckled, “I wish…alas, I haven't found the perfect woman.” Studying her for a moment, “Well, until now.”

CUT BACK TO THE BARREKS

“Jenkins…come on man,” Kevin urged, “You have to tell Miss Rineheart what you saw.”

“I don't know if I can…”

“Man, this is Mike's sister…” Kevin informed, “She has the right to know what happened.”

He ran his nervous fingers through his hair again and spoke up, “If CID hears about this-”

“No ones gonna here about it,” Kevin assured, “It's just you and Miss Rineheart.”

“Do you trust her?” Jenkins inquired.

“Yeah, I do.”

He finally nodded his head and spoke up, “Fine, but I'll pick the location.”

“Sure, where?”

“Lover's peak,” he informed, “At 1200HRS.”

“That will be fine…” Kevin nodded and approached the door, “I gotta go Jenkins.”

“Alright,” he said, opening the door for him. “Talk to ya later.”

“Bye and thanks,” Kevin waved and exited the room.

Jenkins started to close the door when it was suddenly pushed open. “WHAT THE?”

“Well, Corporal…” Lt. Devins greeted as he sauntered into the room, “It's nice to see you again.”

Jenkins stood at attention and replied, “Good evening Lt. Devins.”

“So, what were you two talking about?” he asked, closing the door behind him.

“Nothing important, Sir.”

Lt. Devins eyed him and retorted, “That's not what I heard…”

A MILE OUTSIDE THE CRASH SITE

The moon was shining down upon this little peace of heaven as the stars sparkled in the clear sky.

Malachi parked behind some rocks and got out. “Here we are…”

I climbed out, glancing around my new surroundings and noticed a trail leading east of us.

“Here you go,” she said, grabbing two large flashlights and tossed one at me.

“Thanks…” I caught it and gestured, “is that the trail?”

“Yep,” Malachi nodded, moving towards the trail. “Follow me.”

I followed her down the well-used dirt path, keeping my eyes and ears in tune around me. Don't need any surprises…

CUT TO LIV'S LIVING QUARTERS

“Thank you,” Sam said, moving back until she was stopped by the bookshelf. “Sorry…”

Liv grinned at this flustered attempt to flee and moved into her prey's personal zone. “Tis alright…no damage done,” she spoke up, gently caressed Sam's cheek, “Sam, you seem a bit nervous.”

Sam's heart sped up as this beauty before her made the first move. I didn't think it would happen this fast… “Well, maybe you just me caught off guard…” she nervously replied.

Reading this from her eyes and revealed, “I suppose…by the way you've been flirting with me all day—seemed to me that you wanted this too.”

Sam's eyes widen at her comment, “NO…YES…I mean,” fumbling for the right words, “I do…but I'm used to going out on a few dates before-”

Liv placed her finger upon Sam's lips and enlightened, “In my line of work…you live every minute to its fullest.” Moving to face her and continued, “Because you never know if you have another.” She seductively licked her lips, removing her finger and replaced it with her now moist lips.

Sam started to say something and was silenced by Liv's lips. She fell into the kiss; parting hers as a their tongues explored one another's and felt her body being pressed up against the shelf by Liv's.

“RING…RING!!” the phone echoed through room.

Liv pulled away abruptly and gently outlined Sam's lips with her finger. “I'll be right back.”

“Wow…” Sam sighed, taking a much needed breathe. Going…TOO fast…well maybe.

Liv picked the phone on its fourth ring and growled, “Dakota here.”

Col. West greeted, “Good evening General Dakota. I'm sorry to interrupt you-”

“Get on with it Colonel.”

“CID's preliminary report is in.”

“And?”

“The Black Hawk was shot down by a Stinger missile. The investigators found fragments with the wreckage.”

“What in the hell…” Liv grumbled and inquired, “Did the CID's check the armory?”

“Yes, Ma'am…a platoon in the B-OPS has one Stinger unaccounted for,” shuffling of papers, ”And there's something else too.”

Liv sighed, “Go on…”

“Rumor has it that there's a witness.”

“Find the thief and bring this witness in alive.”

“Yes, Ma'am.”

“Good, I'll talk to you in the morning.” Liv hung the phone up and turned to her guest. “So, where were we?”

The room was now empty.

Liv glanced around and realized that she had snuck out the front door. “Sam…” she whispered, smirking. “I'll give this one to you…but next time your mine.”

OUTSIDE THE CRASH SITE

The familiar yellow scene tape was before us. I turned to Malachi and whispered, “Stay here. I'll be back in few.”

She nodded, “Sure.”

I silently approached the crash site. Everything around me was scorched from the wreckage. I noticed that there were skid marks that stopped between two trees. Must have been where the tail section landed. The wreckage had already been removed from the site. Damn… I heard footsteps to my left, silently I moved away from them.

A roaming SP stopped for a moment then, turned and backtracked to where he came.

I gotta be more careful… I continued further along the crash site and came up to some more charred areas. I glanced around as a something caught my eye. It was glistening in the moonlight, beckoning me to come near. Realizing that the guards weren't that far away and left my light off as I approached. Whatever it is…it was buried a bit. No wonder the investigators missed this. I fell to one knee as I reached it, picking the fragment up and observing it.

The small fragment was the size of my hand as I flipped it over and wiped some dirt off it. The piece was badly charred as I made out a letter and two numbers. “S…4…2…” I read out loud. Now what- wait…maybe it's a serial number.

“SNAP!” a twig was stepped on.

I pulled out my .45 and spun around to face the intruder.

“Don't shoot!” Malachi gasped, froze with fear and raised her hands to the air.

“Damnit, Malachi…” I grumbled, holstering my weapon. “You could have been shot.”

“Sorry…” she said, lowering her arms. “But we gotta go.”

“Why?”

“Another squad of soldiers just arrived.”

“Damn…” I glanced over at the area one more time then, down at the piece in my hand. “Let's go then,” I affirmed, leaving the way I came.

SAM'S QUARTERS

“What was that…” she sighed, “She seemed to be a different person.” Sam shook her head, “I'm just thinking too much…Liv's just aggressive.” What did you think she would be…a passive person? “Hello, she's in the Military…” she said, bopping herself up side the head.

“Is everything all right?” Daniel inquired.

Sam turned around, “Yeah, Daddy…” she gave him a hug and revealed, “Just tired, that's all.”

Daniel escorted her into the house, “Come on Sweetheart…I fixed us some dinner.”

OUTSIDE THE CRASH SITE

“So, Taylor is that part of the copter?” Malachi asked, hopping into the driver's seat and started it up.

“No…I think it's from something else,” I said, climbing in and buckled up.

“Whatever it is…it's something right?” she inquired, shifting gears and peeled out.

“Yeah…” I nodded, looking down at it.

HOURS LATER

“INTRUDER ALERT…CODE RED…ALL PATROLS-” an automated female voice announced.

“BAM…BAM BAM…BAM!!”

“Come on…” a familiar voice advised, “We're almost there.”

My sight was still blurry but at least I could make out the different blurs as people. “Where are we?” I finally asked.

“Level 2,” she said, tightening her grip around my waist.

A loud blood-curdling scream echoed from behind us.

*FLASH*

I bolted up, wiping the sweat from my brow and glanced around my dark room. The flower print curtain moved from the air conditioner below, which let in a bit of light from outside. What in the hell… “Tay, you gotta' calm down…” I said, reading my watch. “3:00 am, too damn early.” I sighed, laying back down and closed my eyes once again. Just give me a couple more hours…

DAWN AT NELLIS AFB

A pre-recorded bugle call was played over the loud speakers, announcing the rising of the flag.

“KNOCK…KNOCK!!”

“Yeah…” Sam grumbled, turning over. “A few more minutes…”

Daniel opened the door and peeked in, “Samantha, time to get up.”

“Awww…” Sam whined, sitting up and heard the bugle. “What's that?”

“Oh, wake up time…” he replied, “It's when they raise the flag.”

“Oh…” she said, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.

“Coffee is a brewin'…” he informed, closing the door behind him.

EIYSIAN FIELDS INN

“RING…RING!!”

I slowly reached over and brought my cell to my ear. “Taylor here,” I said, yawning.

“Taylor, it's Kevin…”

“Hey, what's up?”

“Jenkins wants you to meet him at Lover's peak at 1200HRS.”

“Where's that at?” I asked, setting up.

“Well, there's a gas station a couple miles east from the inn. Make a left at the next road and follow it till you get to a fork in the road, take the left one. Follow it until you come across a gravel road, turn off on it and you'll come across a parking area.”

“Okay.”

“It's a small peak,” he explained, “Beautiful really…”

“Thanks, Kevin.”

“No problem…” he replied, “I have a day shift…so give me a buzz later. See ya.”

“Alright, bye…” I said, hanging the phone up and slowly got up. Time to get my tired ass up and go for a run.

MEANWHILE

Sam was buttoning the cuffs to her white blouse as she descended down the stairs. She fixed her gray skirt one more time and entered the kitchen in search of a much need cup of coffee. She walked over to the table and greeted, “Hi, Daddy…” kissing his cheek.

“Hello, Sweetheart…” he was packing some of his notes into his satchel and revealed, “Your bagel is up.”

“Thanks,” she said, taking the bagel and spreading some cream cheese on it. “So, when are we leaving?”

“As soon as your ready,” he informed, tying his gray tie then, fixing his collar to his white dress shirt. He pulled out a tie clip from his gray pleated pants and stared at it for a moment. Sara, gave this to me… The clip had a small green turtle with bright blue eyes and a huge grin upon its cute little face. After I told her about my Jasper…a box turtle I had as a kid. He was my first and only pet as a child.

Sam looked over at her father, noticing the sadness in his eyes. “Thinking about Mom?” she asked, taking the clip from him and attaching it to his tie. “There you go.”

Daniel nodded, “I miss her…”

“I do too,” she said, hugging him and abruptly changed the subject. “Our first day at our new lab…”

“I guess we should get going,” he said, “Make a good impression and all.”

“KNOCK…KNOCK!!”

“I'll get it Sweetheart,” Daniel said, moving towards the front door.

The door opened, revealing a Sergeant who was standing at attention. “Good morning Sir,” he abruptly greeted.

“Good morning to you too,” Daniel responded, “What can I do for you?”

“Sir, the General requested that you should follow her car to Area 51.”

“Sure,” he replied, chucking. “Considering I haven't a clue where it is.”

The Sergeant continued to stare at him and finally spoke up, “The General is waiting in the car.”

No sense of humor…sad. Daniel shook his head, “Alright, we'll be out in a minute.”

“Yes, Sir…” he said, about faced and walked back to the car.

“Who was that Dad?”

“Liv's driver,” Daniel replied, “They're waiting for us.”

EIYSIAN FIELDS INN

I had jogged to the gas station without even a second thought. Noticing that the station was now open as its first customers were shopping within it.

“HEY TAYLOR!”

I turned to the familiar voice and greeted, “Hello Malachi!”

She gestured for me, “COME ON OVER, SWEET THANG!”

SWEET THANG? I guess she doesn't want to live long… I sighed, checking both directions and crossed the highway.

Malachi flicked her cig as her eyes roamed over my body. “Damn, girl…ya look good…” lowering her voice, “good enough to eat.”

I stared at her for a moment, raising my brow and spoke up in my best hick drawl. “To bad you'll never gonna' get any,” slowly approaching her and revealed, “Besides, you couldn't handle me anyway.” Glaring at her, "Nah…go back to that $2 crack whore that's in your closet," flashing a grin, “Bumpkins.”

Malachi stood there for a moment wide eyed, finally taking a much needed puff. “I..I thought you m..might like some water,” she stuttered out, pulling out a bottle of water from a cooler and held it out.

“Thanks,” I said, taking the bottle and twisting the cap off. I lifted the bottle to my lips and took a large gulp of it.

“Your welcome.”

NELLIS AFB

A large sign read, “AREA 51. AUTHORIZED PERSONEL ONLY. TRESSPASSERS WILL BE SHOT ON SITE.”

A medium size gatehouse was to the left of the General's car as two armed guards approached the car. A large metal bar was down, blocking the road in which to enter.

The SP on the left spoke up to the driver, “Sergeant, your ID please?”

The Sergeant showed him the ID.

SAM'S CAR

Sam observed them then, the large sign. “Area 51?” she asked, “Isn't this where they keep the Alien bodies?”

Daniel shrugged, “Its just fiction made by the media and Hollywood to make money.”

“I guess so…”

The gate lifted and the General's car passed through.

Sam pulled up next, rolled the window down and parked.

The SP approached her and greeted, “Morning Dr. Evans,” he turned to other passenger, “Morning Dr. Andrews.”

“Good morning,” Sam responded.

Daniel waved, “Hello.”

“General Dakota issued these to you both,” the SP handed her two ID's and informed, “This is your clearance to enter the compound.”

“Thank you,” she said, handing one ID to her father.

The SP pushed a button and the gate ascended. “You may enter.”

Sam placed it in gear and drove through.

The General's car pulled out, leading them further into the compound.

All around them was a secluded desert for miles around and on the horizon was a cluster of buildings. A Stealth bomber flew by and was on its final descended.

“This way out there…” Sam said, glancing around.

“Wow…” he pointed towards the bomber, “A B2 Stealth.”

Sam grinned at her father.

LOVER'S PEAK

I leaned against my car, glancing down at my watch and it read; 11:55 pm. Jenkins has five minutes… I moved my attention towards the peak. The view was breath taking, as I stared at this undisturbed landscape. A feeling of overwhelming peace entered my soul… I heard a car pull into the parking area; it drove up and parked in front of mine.

Jenkins nervously looked around before he stepped out from his Mustang. He grimaced, holding his side as he moved toward me and grumbled, “Miss Rineheart?”

“Yes, are you Jenkins?” I observed him, an average tanned male, inch or two shorter than me in his early 20's. Noticing the pain in his face as he approached me. Someone did a number on him.

Jenkins nodded, “Yeah…”

“Are you all right?”

“Just got carried away at a sparing match,” he replied abruptly.

“Tell me what you witnessed.”

He ran his fingers through his hair and spoke up, “I was here because my girlfriend-”

“The short version…”

He glared at me.

I returned it with my famous 'Stare'. My 'don't mess with me…or I'll beat the living shit out of you look.' Reading the fear in his eyes as he finally backed down. Good, he has some brains after all.

Jenkins turned his gaze away from me and continued, “Anyway, I noticed this Black Hawk flying low…right above me. It started to ascend,” he pointed towards his left, “When I saw this streak of light in the corner of my eye. I thought it was a star or something.”

I observed his demeanor, realizing that he was telling me the truth and nodded. “Go on…”

He turned to face me, “Then I heard this loud explosion…when I looked up and noticed that the copter falling from the sky.”

“What did you do after that?”

“I busted ass and got the hell out of here,” Jenkins replied, “I wasn't about to get caught here.”

I shook my head and inquired, “Why didn't you tell anyone?”

“Lady, I like my life-”

The next thing I remembered was that I grabbed him by his shirt and brought him to my eye level. “I loved my Brother…” I growled, “He didn't deserve to die-”

His eyes widened at my strength and he gasped, “I'm sorry, Lady!”

Finally taking control of my temper, I pushed him away and took a much needed breathe. Calm down Tay…he's not worth it.

“I've seen a lot of weird things here…” he muttered, “If you want to live happy life, you don't acknowledge anything.”

I glared at him and retorted, “If that's how you want to live your cowardly life—then I'm sorry for you.”

“Hey!”

“You're a pitiful excuse for a human being.”

“HOLD IT RIGHT THERE!” a male voice ordered from behind me, “PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!”

A squad of armored SP's circled us with their weapons drawn.

I instantly placed my hands behind my head.

“What's going on?” Jenkins shouted, turning to me. “You set me up!”

I rolled my eyes and growled, “Shut the hell up.”

Jenkins struggled with his captors and was thrown against his car in retaliation. “HEY!” he shouted, “I didn't do anything.”

“SHUT UP!” the male voice ordered.

I remained motionless as a pair of hands quickly frisked me. I felt my gun being removed in one quick move then, my wallet. This isn't happening…

The SP spoke up, “She's a Detective, Sir…”

Jenkins yelled, “YOU'RE A COP?”

Lt. Devins approached them, glancing at the ID then at me. “Detective Rineheart, what brings a Kansas City Cop to Nellis?” he inquired.

I stared at him; he's my height, average build and a light complexion. His dark eyes made contact with mine, observing me. “I'm on vacation…”

“Take Corp. Jenkins in…” he said, turning to the others. “And you're just having a friendly conversation with our suspect?”

I shrugged, “Things happen…”

“Then I guess you wouldn't mind coming with us-”

“Are you arresting me?”

“Oh, by no means…” Lt. Devins retorted, “Just bringing you in for some questions.”

“On what grounds?”

“Conspiracy to cover up a terrorist act against the US Government,” he abruptly responded, leading me towards another car.

“That's nonsense…”

Lt. Devins smirked, “Things happen…”

MEANWHILE

“Dad, the lab is unbelievable!” Sam expressed, carrying with her some folders.

Daniel was typing on his computer and nodded, “I know…I've only read about some of this equipment let alone used it.” He sighed, “I'm so used to using whatever I could-”

She placed her hand on his shoulder and assured, “I know…I've used some at the university. So, that shouldn't be a problem.”

“Well, good…” Liv spoke up, entering the office and followed in tow was Col. West.

They both look up from what they were doing.

“Thanks,” Sam responded, grinning.

“Thanks, Liv…” he said and started to get up.

Liv motioned for him to stay, “It's all right Daniel. I just wanted you two meet the head of security for Area 51.” She introduced them, “Daniel…Samatha this is Colonel West,” she gestured, “Col. West, this is Dr. Andrews and Dr. Evans.”

Daniel shook his hand, “Nice to meet you.”

“It's a privilege to protect your work, Sir.”

“Thanks.”

Col. West turned his attention to Dr. Evans, with a touch of flirtation. “It's a pleasure to meet you Ma'am.”

“Why thank you Colonel West,” she thanked, shaking his hand.

“If you have any questions or if you need anything just ask,” Col. West informed.

Daniel replied, “We will, Colonel.”

A cell phone rang.

“Excuse me…” Col. West pulled his phone out and exited the room.

“I'll leave you two to your work,” Liv said, turning to leave.

Sam approached her, “Liv, can we talk?”

“Sure,” Liv nodded, “Follow me.”

“So, how are you today?” Sam asked, following her into the hallway.

“Alright,” Liv replied, leading her into Sam's office. “And you?” She opened the door for her, “After you.”

“Fine, thanks.”

Liv closed the door behind her, “So, what do you want to talk about?”

“I sorry for running out on you last night,” Sam apologized, “I was acting like a teenager or something.”

“It's alright…I should be the one to apologized. I was the aggressive one, I shouldn't have force myself on you.”

“You didn't…” she retorted and expressed, “You were right…I've wanted you from the moment I laid my eyes on you.”

Liv grinned as she slowly approached her, “So, what do we do now?”

“This,” Sam was upon her in an instant, passionately kissing her as her hands roamed over Liv's chest.

Liv fell into the kiss, while her hands roamed over Sam's back.

Sam broke the kiss for a much needed breathe as Liv began to kiss a trail down her neck. Gasping out, “Oh god…” as a tongue traced her sensitive earlobe.

Liv picked her up and carried her over to the desk. She sat her down on the edge of it and with a quick swipe; the desk was cleared. She began her assaulted on Sam's breasts, feeling taunt nipples perking up underneath all the layers.

Sam pulled off Liv's jacket and was on the third button of her shirt. Too many clothes…GOD, I'm on fire!

Liv pulled Sam's shirt out of the skirt as her hands went to the next obstacle, her bra. She captured those voluptuous lips, wanting to taste her again.

“KNOCK…KNOCK!!”

“Damnittohell…” Liv grumbled, “YES?”

Col. West spoke up, “General Dakota, CID requests your presence ASAP.”

Sam pulled her closer and whispered, “We can finish this later…”

“Alright, I'll be out in a minute…” Liv informed. Tucking her shirt back in and buttoning it back up. “I'm holding you to that,” she remarked, kissing her one last time. She turned, picking up her jacket and put it quickly on.

Sam fixed her own shirt and retorted, “Oh, count on it.”

Liv flashed her one last grin and slipped out the door.

“Hot damn…”

LATER IN A CID INTERROGATION ROOM

“Do you have a hearing problem?” I decreed, “I'm on personal leave--check it out. Call Lt. Bowers, he'll confirm it.”

“We're in the process of doing that, Detective…” Lt. Devins revealed and inquired, “So, what's your relationship to Corp. Jenkins?”

“What relationship?” I repeated, “I just met him.”

“What were you two talking about?”

I dryly responded, “The weather.”

Lt. Devins slammed his fists onto the table and growled, “STOP FUCKING AROUND!”

“You need to check into a anger management course…” I suggested, smirking. “It really does help.”

“WHY I OUTTA-”

“ENOUGH!” General Dakota decreed, entering the room. “Is this how you treat a witness?”

Lt. Devins stood at attention and quickly replied, “No Ma'am.”

I observed her, she was an inch or two shorter than myself; tanned athletic build, dark eyes and short dark hair. Attractive…totally plays on my side. Could be a nice conquest or distraction, if had the time.

The General glanced at me then back to the Lieutenant. “Lt. Devins, if you weren't in such a hurry to coerce Detective Rineheart here. You would have read that her brother Warrant Officer Micheal Rineheart was one of the soldiers that had perished,” she enlightened, “I do believe that you owe her an apology.”

“I'm sorry for offending you, Detective Rineheart.”

I nodded, “I accept…”

“Now leave us…” Gen. Dakota dismissed him then, turned her attention to me.

“Yes, General Dakota…” he said, about faced and exited the room.

“My condolences to you…” Gen. Dakota expressed, holding out her hand. “I'm General Dakota…”

“You already know who I am, “ I said, shaking her hand.

The General nodded, “I know why you're here.”

“Indulge me…”

“You're here to find out what happened to your Brother.”

I silently sat there.

CHAPTER 6

“I regret to inform you that this is a CID case and NOT a civilian one.”

I tried unsuccessfully to keep my emotions from showing and responded, “So, what are you going to do to me?”

She leaned against the table, staring into my eyes. “Well, from what Lt. Bowers said about you being his best Detective and all…nothing,” she revealed and added, “If I send you back…you'd be right back here on the next flight anyway.”

I raised a brow at her comment, nodding.

Reading this as a surprise Gen. Dakota enlightened, “Considering that your methods maybe iffy…but you do have a excellent record. I like that.”

“Well, that's glad to hear.”

“What I'm going to purpose something--lets say it's going benefit both of us.”

Reading her stoic stare, finding the truth behind those eyes and inquired, “What if I say no?”

“Well, if we catch you disrupting a CID case again…you WILL be prosecuted by the proper authorities,” Gen. Dakota informed, “Not to mention that your career will be shot to Hell.”

Raising my brow once more at this small threat, “Fine, go on.”

“You keep up your little investigation,” she stated, “All you have to do is just keep me informed on your progress.”

“First hand knowledge,” I retorted and asked, “What do I get?”

“What do you want?”

“All the files to the case…” I replied, “Transcripts from the Air towers, log journals…everything.”

General Dakota nodded, “Done…”

Raising another brow at her answer, eyeing her. “You're just going to hand me classified files?” I scoffed and probed, “What's your agenda, General?”

“Lets just say that I don't have a lot of faith in our CID's…” she enlightened, “Besides, traitors can be anywhere.”

Ahh…I get it. She's using me. Well, we're both using each other. “Traitors?” I repeated and added, “You don't have much faith in your own people.”

She got up and moved towards the window.

I must have struck a nerve…

“Detective Rineheart, I didn't get to where I'm at on relying on other people…” Gen. Dakota abruptly responded, “My faith in my own abilities brought me here.” She turned around to face me, “Trust is word that don't use around here. I can see it in your eyes…your agenda's the truth and you deserve to find it,” she approached me and expressed, “And if I can do my part in it…then I will.”

I sat there stunned at the frankness of her words. Never thought a General would open up to a total stranger, such as myself. I'm gonna have to keep my guard up on this one.

“So, Detective…do we have a agreement?”

I nodded, “I'll do it…”

“Good,” she acknowledged, remembering something. “Oh, one other thing…no one is to know about this little arrangement of ours.”

“Fine.”

Gen. Dakota opened the door and called out, “Lt. Devins, front and center.”

Lt. Devins was before her in an instant, “Yes Ma'am.”

“Lieutenant, I want a Hummer waiting for me outside and Detective Rineheart's possessions.”

“Yes, Ma'am.”

AREA 51 LAB 3

The two doctors were working on some tests of their own. Until a low growing rumble echoed through the silent room.

“Samantha, are you hungry again?”

Sam blushed, “I must be…”

“I swear…that's one trait that you got from your Mother's side of the family.”

“Daddy…”

He smirked, “Go, have lunch…bring me back a sandwich and some chips.”

“Sure,” she agreed, leaving the room.

MEANWHILE

General Dakota pulled the Hummer next to my car and placed it in park. “Here you are, Detective.”

“Thanks, General…” I said, climbing out and shut the door. “Oh, what about the files?”

“You'll have them by sundown,” she informed, pulling out a business card and held it out. “Here's my personal numbers…call me anytime.”

I took it and nodded, “Alright.”

The General pulled out and drove away.

I glanced down at the card. Shit…how's she gonna know where to send it-HELLO, she probably already knows where I'm staying. No use in hiding… I climbed into my car and started it up.

THE GAS STATION

Malachi was sitting in the shade with couple of her friends. One was blond with dyed black streaks, a skater type chick. The other was more gothic, her spiked hair was dyed black, multi-pierced face and the trademark black clothing.

The Skater asked, “So, where's this hot chick your always talkin' about?”

“Chill, Meg…how the hell should I know?” Malachi grumbled, taking a bite out of her sandwich.

“I think she's making it up…” the Goth taunted, “Just trying to make her love life sound better than it really is.”

“Falcon, at least I have a sex life…” Malachi retorted, “I don't count my right hand as a partner.”

“HEY!” Falcon jabbed her in the side, “Totally not fair, I'm having a bad streak that's all.”

“Yeah right,” Malachi chuckled, “Keep telling yourself that…” She glanced over and noticed a black BMW drive up, “Lookie over there girls…”

Sam pulled her Beemer into the parking area and stepped out. She pushed her sunglasses up with her index finger and glanced around her new surroundings. Well, this my first time off the base…I guess it isn't that bad.

“Bless it be, we have us a real woman…” Malachi gasped, taking a quick swig from her soda.

Meg muttered, “I betcha' she dyes it…”

“You dye yours!” Falcon decreed, turning back to the beauty.

Sam turned to them and sighed, “Great…I just had to have an audience.”

Malachi bolted to her side and inquired, “Do ya need anything?”

“No, thank you…” Sam uninterestingly replied and approached the station's door.

“After you,” Malachi said, opening the door for her.

“Ah…thanks,” Sam thanked, entering the store.

Malachi smirked, as her eyes lavished the woman's firm ass. “Damn…” she sighed, thinking of the many ways to make this beauty scream out her name.

I watched this poorly acted method of chivalry and abruptly cleared my throat. “Can you be a bit more obvious?” I inquired, remembering. “Oh, I forgot who I'm speaking to.”

“Funny, Taylor…” Malachi drearily responded.

Falcon nudged Meg and whispered, “Hey, isn't that the chick?”

“I hope so…tall, dark and beautiful.”

“Let's introduce ourselves,” Falcon suggested, pulling Meg with her.

Malachi lit a cig up and inquired, “So, what can I do for ya?”

“I'm going to get me a large bottle of H2O then, we can talk…” I said, moving towards the door.

A voice called out, “Excuse me…”

I turned to my right to see who called me. I wasn't paying attention to what's in front of me and I collided into someone.

A newspaper caught Sam's eye as she exited the store. It read, 'Three perish in the Black Hawk crash.' How sad…I wonder where it happened. She collides with what seemed to be an unmovable wall.

“Thud!” as a bag crashed to the ground.

Feeling their body bouncing off mine, I instinctively reached out and grabbed them. “Whoa…” I uttered, steadying them. “I got you.”

“Sorry,” Sam apologized, glancing down at her spilled bag of goodies and knelt down to pick them up.

“Here, let me help you…” I said, kneeling down to pick up a couple packs of Ding-Dong's. “Hey, these are the best.”

Sam was in the process of gathering the elusive water bottles and a bag of cheese puffs. “I know…I love the center-,” realizing that she's talking to a complete stranger, “Thanks, for your help.”

A sculpted leg caught my eye then, they instinctively traveled further up this beautiful creature. Sexy legs…curves in all the right areas. Oh, GOD… firm round breasts. I slowly rose up as I took in this goddess before me. She was an inch or so shorter than me. I've always been fond of shorter women. My heart skipped a beat as I laid my eyes upon her angelic face. She had a touch of make-up on, perfect of course. Her lips-voluptuous…was the first word that came to mind. Her short blond hair was sorta' wind blown. I gotta' say…my second favorite look. The angel's sunglasses were lowered enough for me to catch a glimpse of the most fascinating pair of emeralds that I've ever seen. I do believe that I've died and gone to heaven.

Feeling the my eyes upon her. Sam nervously ran her fingers through her hair and apologized again, “I'm really sorry for bumping into you like that.” She glanced up and made contact with a charismatic shade of blue. Never knew they could be like that.

Realizing that I should say something, “You're an Angel…”

Sam winked then, pushed her sunglasses up with her index finger. “Nah…I'm more of little devil,” she scoffed, smirking. Where in the hell did that come from?

I mentally slapped myself for saying that out loud. Raising a brow at her interesting comeback. “No harm done,” I assured and suggested, “Here, let me get you another bag.” I turned to the cashier, who already held a bag out for me. “Thanks.”

“No problem,” he said.

“You don't really have to do this,” she said, placing her snacks into the bag.

“It's my pleasure…” I expressed, “Besides, I feel bad for making you drop your lunch like that.”

“Oh, no…” Sam corrected, “This is just for my late afternoon munchies.”

“Okay…that's good to hear,” I chuckled, opening the door for her. “After you.”

“Thanks,” she grinned and declared, “Such a gentlewoman…I like that.”

I blushed a bit and flashed her my best grin. What can I say? “Thank you, kindly Ma'am…”

God, she's so beautiful…that smile, she's blushing. My heart's palpating and I'm wondering why there's Butterflies in my stomach. All I can manage to do is smile right back at her.

I finally break the unnatural silence and ask, “So, can I walk you to your car?”

“Sure, that would be nice.”

I followed her to a black Beemer. Nice…a professional…I wonder. I caught a glimpse of her New Mexico plates and inquired, “So, are you here on vacation?”

She shook her head, “No, we just recently transferred here.” She took the bag and sat it on her front seat.

We? Damn…of course, an Angel like her would be taken. My heart sank into my gut as well as everything else. I swallowed hard and asked the dreaded question, “So, your married?” Good going Sherlock…

Sam closed the door and replied, “I used to be…but I was talking about my father.”

My heart shot right back up as it thumped against my chest plate. A smile grew across my face and my courage shifted up two notches. “Would you like to have lunch with me?”

She lowered her glasses and raised her brow. “Well, I usually don't go to lunch with a complete Stranger,” she informed.

DUH…hello, where's my manners. “Sorry,” I said, holding my hand out. “My name's Taylor Rineheart.”

“Samantha Evans,” she revealed, shaking my hand and added with a touch of flirtation. “A pleasure to meet you.”

“The pleasure is all mine,” I agreed, feeling a tingling sensation throughout my entire body from that simple touch. What in the… “So, does this mean a yes?”

Sam nodded, “Yes…but I'm not familiar-”

“Oh, me neither…” I informed, “But I know of a Café and it's just down the road.”

“That's fine.”

“Good, just follow my Saturn…” I advised, moving towards my car.

“Okay,” Sam acknowledged as she climbed into her car.

THE SHADED AREA

Falcon chuckled, “Malachi, that's strike two…”

“Hey, I'm not out yet!” Malachi whined, taking another drag.

Meg sighed, “Why are the good ones ALWAYS taken?”

AREA 51 LAB 8

“NO, more excuses…” Col. West warned, “The serum must be ready-”

“It will be,” a middle aged man with dark hair responded and plead, “Just give us some more time.”

“You've had four months,” the Colonel growled, grabbing the scientist by his jacket and shoved him against the wall.

“You can't rush this, Colonel.”

“Oh, I can't?” he repeated as his eyes narrowed and threatened, “You can be replaced.”

“God, I know…” the scientist whined and revealed, “But, it's too late in the game to start over. Face it…you need me as much as I need you.”

Col. West glared at him one more time then, let him go. “Fine…you have until dawn, to get the serum working.”

“Ah…” he grumbled, nodding. “Fine.”

“Have a fun tonight, Dr. Tepis.”

THE CAFÉ

Sam and Taylor were sitting in a booth next to large plate glass window. They're both trying hard to look at their menus and not at each other.

A waitress asked, “What would you guys like to drink?”

Sam replied, “Water, please.”

“I'll have a Dr. Pepper.”

“Alright, I'll be back with your drinks.”

I watched her leave us. Alone at last…well sorta. “Samantha, you're here with your father?”

She nodded, “My father is Dr. Daniel Andrews…maybe you've heard of him.”

“I don't know…” I said, remembering. “Oh, I read in Newsweek that he's doing something with tumors.”

“Well, yes in way…” she acknowledged, “He's developing a serum for breaking them down.”

“Oh, I see.”

“I've been helping him for the past six months now.”

“So, you're a Doctor?”

The waitress came back with their drinks and sat them in front us. “So, are you two ready to order?” she asked, taking out her ordering pad.

“I'll have the Veggie burger, baked potato with sour cream and chef salad with Italian dressing.”

A healthy appetite…that's always good. I glanced back over my menu and found what I wanted.

The waitress turned to me, “And you?”

“I'll have the #2 with French fries and glass of water.”

“Alright, be back in few.”

Sam finally responded, “Yes, I just recently graduated from USC with a PhD in Biochemistry with Molecular Biology specializing in Pathology. When he asked me to join him on his research.”

“Well, that's very impressive.”

“So, Taylor…” she took a much needed sip and continued, “Tell, me about yourself.”

“Well, I graduated with honors and first in my class at Regional Police Academy in Kansas City Missouri.”

“You're a Police officer?”

“I'm a Detective,” I corrected, “In the homicide department.”

“Oh, I like that TV show…”

I chuckled, “Yeah, but it's not that colorful.”

“I see,” she said and inquired, “So, what brings a KC Detective to Vegas?”

“An unofficial investigation…” I muttered. Why in the hell am I telling her all this? It's like I have to tell her the truth…

“Really?” she asked, perking up.

“Yes, I'm afraid so…”

“What's it about?”

“Well,” I paused, talking a sip from my soda.

“I'm afraid Detective Rineheart here has said more than enough,” General Dakota decreed as she approached them.

I turned to her voice and sarcastically responded, “General Dakota, a pleasure to see you so soon.”

“Liv,” Sam gasped, grinning from ear to ear. “I didn't expect to see you until later tonight.”

“Like wise, Detective…” Liv replied and explained, “Well, me neither…until I had this sudden craving for a Philly cheese steak.”

Sam inquired, “Is it alright if Liv sits with us?”

I shrugged, “Sure.”

“Liv, have a seat with us…” she stated, sliding over.

“I don't want to impose myself-”

“Liv, your so sweet…” Sam expressed, patting the seat next to her. “Come on, Sweetheart.”

Liv sat down next to her and leaned over to whisper something into her ear. “You look so radiant…I want to ravish you till collapse from multiple orgasms.”

Sam blushed at the comment, placing her hand upon Liv's leg and squeezed. “Oh, my…” she gasped, taking a deep breathe. Feeling the familiar heat rising up from her-own center. Trying to focus on what's going on, “So, you guys have met before…I take it.”

DAMNITTOHELL…Sweetheart? She's seeing her? UGH…she could totally do better. “Yes,” I drearily responded, taking another sip. Calm down Tay…can't beat her up in a public place. Maybe later. A grin formed upon my face at the thought.

“Yes, I met Det. Rineheart earlier in the day…” the General revealed, “We had an interesting conversation.”

“About what?” Sam asked, glancing at both of us.

I disclosed, “Cloak and dagger stuff.”

“Are you serious?” Sam probed further.

Liv glared at Taylor for a moment, reading her. Jealous…huh? She slid her hand further up Sam's leg and spoke up, “Sort of, Sam…we have an arrangement. She helps me out with a little problem and I help her out with hers. Isn't that right Det. Rineheart?”

Sam's hand caressed Liv's as a smile grew upon her face.

Oh, I just want to pick you up and throw ya out the goddamn window… “That's right General…” I grumbled trying not to focus on where her hand was. Flaunting it won't do ya any good…cause I'll win in the end. What's going on? I'm jealous…over a woman who I just met. HELL YES! I took a much need breath and exhaled slowly, calming myself down.

Sam whispered, “I need to use the ladies room.”

Liv nodded, standing up to let Sam out. She sat back down and felt the daggers from the Detective's eyes. “Anger and jealousy clouds ones mind and takes them away from the ultimate goal,” she advised, lowering her voice

I retorted, “If I needed counseling…I'd go to my therapist.”

“Come now, Detective…” Liv suggested, “Lets not fight over Samantha. That's so Neanderthal…I thought you'd be more disciplined than that.”

“She deserves someone better than you.”

“And that would be you?”

I nodded, “Yes…”

Liv leaned over and disclosed, “Well, last time I checked…Sam was an adult and she could make her own decisions.” Taking a sip from Sam's water and continued, “Pardon me for my temporary amnesia…but when did she loose that ability?”

“She didn't…” I retorted, feeling the anger swelling within me.

“Well, that's settled…” she said and reiterated, “Just remember our little agreement Detective.”

“How could I not forget?”

Liv looked at her watch and excused herself, “I really should be going…I'll let you two enjoy your lunch. Until later, Detective.”

“See ya…” I spoke up, flashing her my best 'eat shit and die' smile. I watched her make a beeline towards the restroom. GODS, she's going in there for a kiss and a quick feel up. The bitch is taunting me. “Tay, ya gotta' stop thinking like that…” I grumbled to myself, “Hell, that's what I would do.” Breathe…one, two, three- I glanced over at the restrooms, observing the 'Loving couple' exiting together and of course, they each had a smile on their faces. Ugh…why me? I watched the Queen Bitch exit out of the café with her sandwich. Thank you, god…maybe I can salvage this lunch.

Sam inquired, “Our food still hasn't arrived?”

“Ahh…no, not yet…” I replied, staring at this Angel across from me. Suddenly, something unfamiliar replaced all my anger and jealousy. My eyes once again made contact with hers. Realizing that I was falling into them and was totally comfortable with it.
